Asian Paints WoodTech Epoxy Insulator is a two-component, solvent-based clear epoxy undercoat that seals natural wood oils, resins and moisture inside the wood. It stops them leaching out and ruining premium topcoats such as polyurethane (PU), melamine, acrylic or polyester. The film is tough, colourless and does not yellow, so the wood's natural colour and grain show through unchanged. Mix 1:1, apply 1 to 2 coats, and do not thin it. Always wait 8 to 10 hours before sanding or overcoating.
Key Features
- True Tone Clarity: A tough, colourless, non-yellowing film that keeps the natural look of the wood
- Chemical Shielding: Resists strong solvents such as xylene, toluene and acetone to protect the wood beneath
- Simple to Use: A 1:1 mix by volume in a dual pack, with no thinner needed

Recommended Applications
- Oily and Resinous Hardwoods: Teak, Rosewood and similar woods, where a minimum of two coats secures the moisture barrier
- Under PU, Melamine, Acrylic or Polyester Topcoats: The first step before your sealer and topcoat system
- Interior and Exterior Wood: Wooden surfaces, veneers and MDF
Step-by-Step Application Process
- Sand: Sand the raw wood along the grain with No. 180 sandpaper, then No. 320 or 400. Wipe off all dust, grease and oil
- Fill: Pack open holes, cracks and dents with WoodTech Wood Filler using a flexible putty knife, let it dry completely, then level it flat
- Mix: Blend the base and hardener 1:1 by volume. Do not thin it. Use the mix within 3 hours
- Apply: Put on 1 to 2 uniform coats by brush, rag or spray gun. On resinous hardwoods like Teak or Rosewood, apply at least two coats
- Wait: Allow 8 to 10 hours of dry time before sanding or applying your sealer and topcoat

1) Why do I need an epoxy insulator before my PU or Melamine topcoat?
Raw wood contains oils, resins and moisture that leach out over time and interfere with premium topcoats like polyurethane, melamine, acrylic or polyester, causing discolouration, poor adhesion or an uneven finish. The insulator seals them in, creating a stable barrier that protects the topcoat system above it.
2) Can I use it on both interior and exterior wood?
Yes. It is a universal undercoat for interior and exterior wooden surfaces, veneers and MDF.
3) How many coats should I apply?
One to two uniform coats are typically enough. For highly resinous exotic hardwoods such as Teak or Rosewood, apply at least two coats to secure the moisture barrier before the sealer and topcoat.
4) How long before I can sand or overcoat it?
Wait 8 to 10 hours. It is touch dry in 15 minutes and tack-free within an hour, but it needs the full 8 to 10 hours to cross-link. Sanding or applying a PU or melamine sealer at about 3 hours traps uncured solvent, which makes the topcoat wrinkle, blister or stay soft.
5) What is the pot life once mixed, and can I thin it?
Once mixed 1:1, use it within 3 hours, and don't mix more than you can apply in that time; discard whatever is left. Never thin it — it is formulated for spray viscosity straight from the kit, and added solvents spoil it.
6) Which kit size should I choose?
Both kits are mixed 1:1. The 2 Litre kit is 1 L resin plus 1 L hardener and covers roughly 260–300 sq ft per coat. The 4 Litre kit is 2 L resin plus 2 L hardener and covers roughly 520–600 sq ft per coat, at 130–150 sq ft per litre by spray. Choose by surface area and number of coats.
